Suzanne says:

Mischa Berlinski’s novel evoked the best and the least appealing memories of my own adventure living in Thailand. He clearly understood both the physical and emotional landscape. In capturing the expat experience so beautifully, Mischa shares both the advantages and the loneliness of being “the other”. I would recommend this book of cultural immersion to anyone planning on living in a different culture for any extended period of time. Bonus plot element – there’s a mystery to solve, too!

I have been reading books by Janet Evanovich. I can’t really say which one is my favorite because I love them all. They are funny, full of suspence and they really make you want to keep reading. I have read all but maybe 4 books and I can’t wait to read the rest. The other thing I like about her books is you don’t have to read them in order. Great books, all of them.

Regan, Lynden Library manager, says:

Just enough mystery binds together a lot of great characters hanging out in the New Jersey projects in this well written novel.  Ray Mitchell, a former project kid himself, has made some money writing for TV and returns to the community to volunteer at the local high school.  Well, we all know that even good intentions can have bad results.  The stand out character is Detective Nerese Ammons, a childhood pal from Ray’s past. Ready for retirement she relentlessly and with a clear vision pursues truth.

Fountain Filled with Blood June 25, 2008

Regan says:

The townsfolk of Millers Kill, New York are worried about a new resort development which may stir up toxins in the water, but what the planned spa ultimately stirs up is more immediately tragic.  A popular local doctor, who happens to be gay, is attacked and then another local businessman as well.  Clare Ferguson truthfully answers that she is neither police nor reporter as she snoops around but sometimes neglects to explain that she is the local Episcopalian priest.  In addition to the tension in the community, Clare and the local police chief have their own balancing act going on adding a hint of romance to this well crafted mystery.

I just finished “Shift” by Jennifer Bradbury. And yes, I read it in one night. If you’re looking for a coming-of -age mystery adventure, this is the read for you. Two high school friends decide to bicycle across the country to the West Coast to celebrate their high school graduation/liberation. Being an avid cyclist myself, I appreciate the sense of freedom the characters experience while biking and the physical and relational challenges they face. One makes it to the coast, the other does not. As the cover states, “Some friends fade away…others disappear”. Who disappears? Why? Read it to find out!
